A number of years ago, I jumped on the “apolitical” bandwagon of Anabaptists, choosing non-participation in “politics” as an expression of Anabaptist faith, defined by refusing to engage in anything involved with “secular” governments, local or national. You will see articles on this blog in that vein. I skipped votes; I looked down on those who were activists in the political sphere; and I looked with disdain at anyone, left or right, who expressed their faith within the realm of politics. Ya know how a while ago I noted that I was having a book published? Well, see, what I couldn’t say then, I can say now… that book will be one of two that will contain my writings.
I got a bit of a wake up yesterday afternoon. You see, at New Eden Fellowship, while we are a member church of Mennonite Church USA and the Eastern District Conference, I would say that the membership of our congregation is probably less than 20% historically-rooted Mennonites. So, to make the assumption that everyone at that congregation, even folks who have been attending for a while, know what a Mennonite is or even what an Anabaptist is…well…you’re fooling yourself. And I did just that, made a bit of a fool of myself by making that assumption. And someone turned to me and said, “What exactly is an Anabaptist, anyways?” Got me flat footed, for sure.
